Yesterday, I was at the launch of Huawei’s Windows 8 smartphone called the “Ascend W1”.
It was a pretty intimate event at the PBCom Bldg. in Makati with select people from media together with Huawei and Microsoft executives.
When I was invited to attend, I was given prior information that this particular device was going to be positioned to target the lower-end market. This actually made it quite interesting for me considering the onslaught of dirt-cheap Android devices that have overrun the country. It is high time that a Windows Phone 8 should emerge within the same price bracket to mix it up with the rest of ’em.
Most, if not all Windows 8 devices in the market are still quite pricey which makes it a tad difficult for those who find the new Microsoft smartphone OS enticing but are held back due to its cost.
The Huawei Ascend W1 is perhaps the answer to that problem.
With a 5-Megapixel Rear Camera with LED Flash, a 1.2GHz Dual-Core Snapdragon Processor, an impressive screen display, a 1950mAh battery which they claim can last over a day on heavy use, and so much more, the Huawei Ascend W1 seems like a wonderful meld of smartphone features and affordability – and it retails for only (ready?) Php 8,990.00.
Hooray!
Finally… It’s here!
With the recent release of Apple’s latest iOS 6.1 update, Globe postpaid subscribers using the iPhone 5 can now experience and enjoy fourth-generation Long Term Evolution – better known as “4G LTE”.
Apple CEO, Tim Cook, specifically mentioned that the Philippines would be one of the countries that will be able to access LTE upon upgrading to the latest iOS version.
I recently updated my iOS to 6.1 as well. Check out my signal when I entered the Rockwell, Makati area…
What does this exactly mean, you ask?
Speed. Incredibly fast and insanely ridiculous data connection speeds.

Whoa! Globe seems to have started showcasing their vast array of LTE (Long Term Evolution) compatible smartphones just recently. Handsome gadgets, if I may add.
Have you seen them? Don’t fret if you haven’t yet… I’ve got ya covered.
But first things first… for the benefit of those who don’t quite understand what LTE is or how it can radically transform one’s mobile surfing lifestyle, allow me to provide you with a quick and brief explanation of what Long Term Evolution is.
LTE has long been seen as the first advancement towards stronger, faster and more efficient 4G data networks. How fast? Verrrrrryyyy FAST! LTE offers wonderful advantages over our present 3G systems such as higher throughput, plug and play compatibility, and low latency. The technology also means Long Term Evolution can work on higher bandwidth networks without any loss of throughput.
Alright… by now you probably already have a better grasp of what LTE is. It is also understood that, just like 3G and 3G-compatible devices, in order to enjoy everything that LTE has to offer, one has to be using a smartphone that uses LTE technology as well.
No problemo. As promised, here they are… check out Globe’s impressive lineup of LTE-enabled phones:
