Enjoying a selection of cheese with a glass of delicious wine is something I would never ever pass up. It is, in my opinion, one of mankind’s greatest pleasures (and creations).
I’ve always loved cheese. All kinds, in fact. From the subtlest flavor to the strongest and most pungent of varieties. Wine, on the other hand, is something I rarely enjoy. It isn’t my go-to beverage when I visit restaurants and bars. But, that isn’t to say that I dislike them altogether. I don’t mind a glass of red every now and then — especially when there’s a fine selection of cheese around.
You see, this practice of serving wine and cheese together have lasted for many generations, dating back hundreds of years. And no one knows the delight of this culinary art more than the French. This is exactly why I made it a point to experience an authentic wine and cheese tasting session during my recent trip to Paris, France.
How can you not, right?
For those who aren’t aware, my great grandfather is French. He grew up in a town located in the Alsace region called, Obershaeffolsheim. It sounds German, I know. But only because Alsace has long been in the middle of a tug-of-war between France and Germany, being ceded by the Germans more than once.
So… what better way to immerse myself in some of the finer French culinary practices than by partaking of some wine and cheese the way my great grandfather used to enjoy it.
KKday made my day
Before my European trip, I browsed through the many fun activities I could enjoy in France through an amazing service provided by KKday’s website — my preferred (and favorite) travel itinerary website.
Lo and behold, KKday indeed had what I was looking for… a fun wine and cheese tasting activity right smack in the “City of Lights”.
I told my travel buddies about it and we all decided to take advantage of KKday’s special offering. It was also a wise decision since KKday offers these activities way more affordable than walk-ins and other similar providers.
Wine and Cheese tasting – An incredible culinary experience :)
We went to this quaint establishment called, La Vache dans Les Vignes.
This was supposed to be our meeting place since the wine and cheese activity itself is usually held in a different location outdoors. But since it was the Summer Solstice in France — the hottest period of summer — the organizers of this activity decided to hold it inside La Vache dans Les Vignes itself.
This establishment is where they actually store (and sell) all their cheese and wine. They also have tables for guests.
During our wine and cheese tasting session, we were greeted by our wine and cheese specialist. He gave us a quick intro on what to expect during this eagerly anticipated activity.
Not long after, we were treated to a wonderful selection of cheese varieties paired with various flights of fine reds and whites.
Some of the kinds of cheese that were featured during our tasting session were Rocamadour, Crottin, Comte, Napoleon Commingeois and Herve.
I had the time of my life experiencing how the intricate flavors of cheese and wine beautifully complement one another.
This activity is a great way for one to develop a more discerning palate and helps you somehow discover the many associations you can make with wine and cheese. Apart from that, I love how it allowed me to have a better appreciation of wine.
If I remember right, we were served over 5 flights of wine with the same number of different kinds of cheese. This cozy little shop we were in was filled with non-stop laughter and friendly banter. And considering how low my tolerance is to alcohol, you can imagine just how happily tipsy I was when the activity was over. Hahaha!
Oh, well… as the French would say, “C’est la vie!”
I’d like to thank KKday and La Vache dans Les Vignes for this wonderful and truly unforgettable gastronomic experience.
If you happen to be in Paris or planning a trip soon to this breathtaking city, I highly recommend that you do KKday’s wine and cheese tasting session as well. You’ll love it!
Whether it’s the beautiful city of Paris, the culture or their love affair with wine and cheese, you just gotta hand it to the French.
