Motorists Beware – New Modus Operandi By Criminals!
It’s just so sad when your desire to help those in need becomes the very avenue criminal elements use to do their dirty work.
The story I’m about to tell you comes from a friend of mine who experienced firsthand (JUST LAST NIGHT) the new modus operandi of criminals and robbers going around busy roads filled with vehicles stopped in traffic.
My friend was along Kalayaan Avenue in Makati around 8PM, stuck in traffic. Alone in his car, a small kid taps on his window asking for money and food.
Typical, right?
Then you suddenly remember it’s Christmas… naturally, the spirit of giving (and being of good cheer) is stronger this time of year.
He opens his window halfway and turns to his bag placed on the passenger seat, looking for something to give to the child.
When he turns back around to face the child again, in front of him instead is an older man with a sharp knife that he immediately sticks hard to my friend’s throat threatening to kill him if he doesn’t surrender his cellphone. Seems pretty clear that the beggar child that came before him was all part of the plan.
My friend complies and hands over his iPhone in a hurry. Soon after, the thief walks away casually like nothing ever happened. What’s worse is that according to my friend, a lot of other people (passers-by, drivers, commuters, etc.) witnessed the crime as it unfolded and just turned a blind eye. It was as if nothing ever happened. They were all probably afraid that they’d end up on the business end of the robber’s knife if they intervened or played hero.
I asked my friend why the thief didn’t ask for his wallet as well. He said the guy seemed to be in a hurry and only took interest in his mobile device. Likewise, my friend didn’t even think of fighting back since the thief, already with half of his arm inside the vehicle, could’ve easily reached for the lock of his door and hurt him much more. It might have even cost him his life.
I’m glad that my friend is safe… but I feel terrible as well. Terrible because situations like this turn us into cynical, paranoid individuals. We end up choosing not to care for our underprivileged brothers and sisters when they come knocking for fear of being victimized by syndicates and criminal elements ourselves.
The safest way to help out beggars and street children, perhaps, is to course our alms and assistance through the proper agencies such as the DSWD instead.
Anyways, for what it’s worth… I hope this story serves as a cautionary tale for everyone.
May you all have a very merry and SAFE Christmas.
Feel free to comment or leave your thoughts below.
November 21, 2013 @ 3:02 AM
sad to hear these stories nearing Christmas..
I just wanna suggest to grab what you want to give before opening the window.. and not too open…
November 21, 2013 @ 3:13 AM
I agree. Better safe than sorry. By opening the window before getting what to give and opening it enough for the arm to squeeze right in was, in my opinion, a momentary lapse as well on the part of the victim… but nevertheless, these elements exist and are obviously more active this time of the year. Everyone should take extra care and be more vigilant.
November 22, 2013 @ 8:48 AM
I hope there isn’t anything important information on your friend’s IPhone. I wouldn’t be take for granted if they only took his IPhone as other people on his contact list could be victimized – anyone’s address, anyone’s password, anyone’s account number, anyone’s profile, anyone’s photo, you name it. I think IPhone should have a tracking device embedded in it if it’s a recent video. He should have it tracked asap.
November 23, 2013 @ 12:27 AM
Tried to track it via find my iPhone but it only works when the phone is online. No important documents though. I submitted the phone’s IMEI to NTC the moment I got home for them to disable the phone.
November 23, 2013 @ 8:08 AM
I hope it was registered in track my iPhone app. Sooner it will be found but then it’s not worthy anyway…
November 21, 2013 @ 8:00 AM
Bystander effect…
Still, why would they use their own child (assuming the child’s their) to do such crimes?! It’s really depressing.
November 21, 2013 @ 11:36 AM
It most likely isn’t their child.
November 21, 2013 @ 9:06 AM
This usually happens to me (people on the street knocking on my window) when I’m with my kids in the car and I never ever entertain them under any circumstances. I’ve encountered too many incidents like this one. I’d rather be safe than nice, nevermind what others think. I guess it comes with always expecting the worst.
November 21, 2013 @ 11:38 AM
Sadly, that’s how we all end up instead of wanting to help. *sigh*
November 21, 2013 @ 3:39 PM
Hi ms. Animetric, this is juvy of TV5, T3Reload. Mam can we have your opinion regarding this new kind of modus operandi and stand as our case study. Based on your comment on this post, you typically experience this kind of modus. We want to expose this in public through our show T3 Reload hosted by the Tulfo brothers. Here is my email acount, [email protected]. Looking forward to your favorable response.
November 21, 2013 @ 5:23 PM
really now? why not give her your TV5 email?
November 22, 2013 @ 10:18 AM
What the hell are you talking about? “you typically experience this kind of modus?” What she clearly stated is what she does to avoid these kinds of incidences. Its not a modus every time a child comes knocking on your window. Its even more annoying that you work for TV5. /rant
November 22, 2013 @ 10:26 AM
I suggest you expose what the police are doing about it. Criminals have no heart and don’t care for nobody and thus no respect for law and order. Police in Manila are really useless. The poor people get used and at the same time innocent people get victimized by this bad elements of society.
November 22, 2013 @ 10:35 AM
Hi Ms. Juvy,
do you have TV5 Email Account?
November 22, 2013 @ 10:37 AM
November 22, 2013 @ 12:10 PM
DIMWIT READ AGAIN,,,,,SHE TYPICALLLY EXPERIENCE, THE KNOCKING IN THE WINDOW, NOT THE POKING OF THE KNIFE,,PLS READ AGAIN!
November 22, 2013 @ 12:24 PM
lol is this another modus? haha
November 23, 2013 @ 12:14 AM
Hello Tulauan! I’m Tina a resident f Poblacion Makati & I hope u can do a report on the growing criminality in our investment rich community from riding n tandems shooting victims for cellphones to motorist holdups to carnaps, etc.etc. Kindly check w/ our brgy.
November 21, 2013 @ 11:19 AM
That’s why we really need to be vigilant. PROGUN here
November 23, 2013 @ 12:29 AM
I learned a lot from this incident. Will be vigilant and more cautious next time.
November 21, 2013 @ 11:20 AM
Terrible. Where are the police!?
November 21, 2013 @ 11:42 AM
Where they usually are. Hiding or busy finding someone to “kotong”.
November 21, 2013 @ 1:29 PM
Maybe they are behind the modus operandi?
November 21, 2013 @ 1:42 PM
Can you prove that statement to be somewhat accurate?
November 21, 2013 @ 2:15 PM
“Maybe”
November 27, 2013 @ 8:51 AM
so not accurate? or not true? or just hearsay?
November 27, 2013 @ 9:19 AM
maybe-
adverb perharps; possibly.
noun a mere possibility or probability.
I guess, you or someone in your family is a police officer?
November 27, 2013 @ 10:53 AM
As the definition suggests, it may not be the truth. But your statement “Maybe they are behind the modus operandi?” implies an accusation which seems to have a proof on the matter. If that is not your intention, then you should chosen your words with much consideration.
“I guess, you or someone in your family is a police officer?” – I am not and as far as I know, no one in my family up to the 2nd degree of affinity and consanguinity is.
I am merely pointing out not to put a pointing finger on another without proof on the matter.
November 21, 2013 @ 6:59 PM
hit a nerve? the possibility is 90%.
November 27, 2013 @ 8:55 AM
how can you prove that the possibility is 90%? the problem with people nowadays is that all of you are putting the blame on someone or something when clearly you don’t have any to back up what you accuse… shame on me for bringing this up. i hope you won’t become victims of criminal elements and come running to the police…
December 9, 2013 @ 8:29 AM
Unfortunately, I’d have to agree with them. Although I’m not generalizing. My uncle was a police officer. He goes to work loaded with meth. He’s involved with illegal activities. Well basically he’s a dirty cop. He uses his position to get what he wants.
December 15, 2013 @ 5:12 AM
your uncle is a dirty cop, so that makes the whole lot of police officers as dirty as your uncle… nice…
so it is like your uncle is filipino and he is a crook, which makes all filipinos, including yourself, as crooked as your uncle.
November 22, 2013 @ 1:32 AM
Possibly.
November 22, 2013 @ 12:19 PM
police fill up their stomachs to reason their incompetence lol. They do “kotong” cause of the pay, might as well have a lot to do without crimes happening for extra pay lol.
December 7, 2013 @ 1:48 PM
not impossible.
November 21, 2013 @ 3:50 PM
If the police were there, then this wouldn’t have happened.
November 22, 2013 @ 6:45 AM
not necessarily… a female officemate got robbed in Makati a few years back by a riding-in-tandem, a police within a few meters did not even bother to catch the crooks… the asshole even said “pano ko hahabulin yan” when confronted…
December 5, 2013 @ 3:46 PM
true! why would the police ran after the thief, if the police were the mastermind.
November 21, 2013 @ 11:32 AM
These types of criminals typically have the backing of the police. That is why they can operate fearlessly.
November 21, 2013 @ 11:41 AM
Agree. Not all criminals are in cahoots with the police, though. But a lot are. Infuriating!
November 21, 2013 @ 12:02 PM
Kalayaan ave near BGC!? Yep madami dun mga batang ganyan. When we encountered them (near stoplight from JP Morgan area), fortunately we never opened our window. First, we thought that entertaining them is not a good idea. At the same time, we don’t have spare coins nga lang. :D

November 21, 2013 @ 12:14 PM
thanks for the warning! fortunately i operate with the mindset that i dont want those… kids in the street and so i will not encourage them to stay in any way. most of the time i dont even acknowlege them
however i will post this for my other friends
November 21, 2013 @ 12:23 PM
You know what’s sadder? People turned a blind eye. :(
November 21, 2013 @ 12:58 PM
Which is why they didn’t get victimized unlike our good samaritan. The world is full of vermin and even if it weren’t, giving handouts to stray children isn’t a viable way of reducing the poverty level.
November 21, 2013 @ 4:36 PM
Just a thought: The victim himself did not bother to run after the thief. Seriously, what do we expect other people to do?
November 21, 2013 @ 4:58 PM
Running after the thief might have put him more at risk.
November 21, 2013 @ 7:07 PM
the victim is just one, the “audience” on the other hand, could’ve done something, maybe all of them are just, waiting for someone to kick that criminal’s butt and when that garbage is disabled, they will then act, try to look brave. cowards. it’s always like that, papogi style. our country is hopeless and everyone should start accepting that.
and, what? police??? PHEEEWW!
November 24, 2013 @ 2:32 PM
Not necessarily papogii. They are juat as pissed off as anyone else. Once they someone taking the initiative, they all follow. Easy for you to say they are cowards especially when your behind a computer.
November 22, 2013 @ 6:52 AM
kasi me utak sya? the thief will most probably be in a group of other men… if he will run after them then what’s stopping these guys into sticking the knife into his guts?…
November 23, 2013 @ 12:32 AM
Exactly what I thought.
November 21, 2013 @ 12:27 PM
how effective is it if you power up the window, having his hand stuck on it, and driving on? sarap siguro nun ikaladkad papuntang edsa.
November 21, 2013 @ 1:02 PM
Reminds me of a movie with zombies that I can’t remember. :D
November 21, 2013 @ 1:24 PM
My friend was stuck in traffic so dragging him wouldn’t work. Besides, with everyone turning a blind eye, it would’ve been a futile attempt.
November 21, 2013 @ 4:08 PM
Reminds me of a scene in Snatch. But instead of an arm, Mullet got caught by his neck tie, then Bullet-Tooth Tony (the driver) drove off while listening to ‘Lucky Star’ by Madonna.
November 24, 2013 @ 9:17 PM
Probably wouldnt work since cars made nowadays have those child safety power windows that opens back up all the way when it hits something plus if you speed off you’re just gonna crash into the car infront of you. Traffic ee. Nice idea thou, dangerous but nice.
December 6, 2013 @ 3:11 PM
true.. just dont kill the culprit.. pwede putulan na lang ng 2 kamay..
November 21, 2013 @ 12:30 PM
DSWD? meh… I don’t see them work all throughout these years.
November 21, 2013 @ 1:24 PM
Sad. :(
November 22, 2013 @ 12:18 AM
And the only thing that they do is to “repack” Indonesian donations to the typhoon victims in Tacloban with their own plastic bags, masabi lang na galing sa kanila (DSWD) yun….. Kupal lang! >:| (sorry for the kanto word….)
November 21, 2013 @ 12:32 PM
That’s what I’m talking about. Scrap the good for nothing juvenile criminal justice law.
November 21, 2013 @ 12:33 PM
that’s why u never ever should lower your window down too much…and make sure u have ur alms ready before turning your eyes away from the open window.
November 21, 2013 @ 1:26 PM
that is why i have stopped giving…blind are usually part of a syndicate, sampaguita people also…the only way to keep them out of the streets is to STOP giving. it is not your job to feed them – but the government’s, that is if they have enough time away from counting the PDAF moneys…
November 21, 2013 @ 1:27 PM
It was not mentioned that the victim reported the incident to the police… Did he?
November 21, 2013 @ 5:00 PM
Nope. No police in sight. Plus, that part of the street is usually dark. How to identify the thief is another problem.
November 21, 2013 @ 1:30 PM
This is not new to me :( Just be safe everyone. Sharing this post with friends :D
November 21, 2013 @ 2:00 PM
We all feel like giving a little extra since it’s Christmas. The bad thing is, crime is expected as well because it’s Christmas. Sigh. Glad your friend is ok though
November 21, 2013 @ 5:00 PM
Thanks! Be safe also. Merry Christmas.
November 21, 2013 @ 2:39 PM
So sad naman. I wish that I could do something to alleviate the situation.
November 21, 2013 @ 2:44 PM
My father once told me “if you want to help them, dont give”. The reason why they stay in the streets because people still give, thus putting them in danger than helping them.
November 21, 2013 @ 5:01 PM
There is truth to that.
November 23, 2013 @ 12:36 AM
This is noted. I will NEVER give alms. I learned a lot from this incident.
November 21, 2013 @ 2:56 PM
Never EVER open your window halfway.
November 21, 2013 @ 5:02 PM
Never ever open your window period. Me thinks.
November 21, 2013 @ 3:22 PM
Another modus is though you slightly open your window to give money, they will squeeze their fingers inside and use their body weight to open the window. At first I thought my window motor was broken as it was not working after the incident. My brother told me to buy a zapper next time but I told myself that I will never ever open my windows anymore in traffic.
November 21, 2013 @ 3:49 PM
Giving out food, money, or anything to children on the streets is hardly helping. I taught my wife that this is not the way to ‘help’. We are just encouraging these children, most especially their parents, an “easy way” to get some grub.
It is what it is.
November 21, 2013 @ 5:03 PM
That’s true. The saying “teach a man to fish…” comes to mind.
November 21, 2013 @ 3:51 PM
I can’t believe some of the comments I’m reading here. *sigh*
November 21, 2013 @ 4:11 PM
What this poor, unfortunate victim could’ve done in order to spare his life and his iPhone was to lean his seat backwards, use one arm to disarm the thief, and the other to roll up the window.
That’s what I would’ve done, and, haters/idiots/fools, spare me the “magagawa-mo-ba-‘yan-talaga” rhetoric, ’cause, as a driver, dapat maging alerto ka sa daan at sa kapaligiran mo habang nagmamaneho, kahit stuck ka sa traffic.
November 21, 2013 @ 4:17 PM
Just the other day, I was driving with my mom when a kid tapped on the window. I ignored her, but my mom insisted that I should just give her a peso to send her away. I said no, I’m not giving her any money. It’s not that I don’t feel compassion for the poor, but it’s the incidents like this, plus the numerous accounts of how a lot of those beggars are part of larger syndicates, or how a lot of them are children of lazy parents who don’t want to work.
November 21, 2013 @ 5:04 PM
I know what you mean. I’ve seen those lazy parents slacking nearby when kids beg for money. How sad. And infuriating.
November 21, 2013 @ 6:19 PM
sad to hear stories like this,, when the good samaritan gets targeted. My close friend experienced somethIng alike. She usually rides the MRT/LRT on her way home when, she witnessed an old lady near her suddenly collapse. Being a newly grad doctor/concerned bystander, she tried to help. Thinking that the old lady had an MI(heart attack), she placed her bag on the ground near her and tried to assist the lady. when the old lady said she was okay, my friend then left for home. at home, she then found her ipad and wallet missing.
November 21, 2013 @ 6:34 PM
inipit mo sana gamit yung power window
November 22, 2013 @ 12:04 AM
Madaling dukutin ang lock since the guy’s arm is halfway in.
November 24, 2013 @ 6:56 PM
try it. ilagay mo yung arm mo sa window tapos isara mo yung bintana. abutin mo yung lock. saka yung mga locks ng mga kotse nandun na sa lever sa side ng door. wala na dun sa old location sa may taas katabi ng glass
November 21, 2013 @ 6:37 PM
i feel sorry for your friend. but still we must be aware of our environment. though christmas is fast approaching, if we really want to help our indigent fellow filipinos we can donate goods for them via Non Government Organizations. let it be a lesson and lets be thankful that your friend is safe after that modus. “I’m just stating my thought, no hate :) “
November 22, 2013 @ 12:04 AM
No worries. Thanks for sharing.
November 21, 2013 @ 7:38 PM
Don’t mind those beggars on the street nowadays we live in a crazy world let the stupid govt handle the poverty…
November 21, 2013 @ 7:45 PM
opens his window HALFWAY?! sorry but your friend is partly to blame…it’s like he’s asking himself to be in danger or get robbed, regardless who the person is outside the car…and opening the window BEFORE reaching over to look for money? really?!
November 23, 2013 @ 12:39 AM
It was a bad move for me to open the window first, and search for the granola bars that I would have given to the kid. It was a learning experience, though. Glad that it was only the iPhone. Not my life.
November 21, 2013 @ 7:58 PM
Rules of the urban jungle: when walking, DO NOT LOOK at the faces of people you are meeting. Instead, look at the hands…they might be holding a knife or a gun! DO NOT talk to strangers nor answer even the stranger is talking to you. SWEEP THE STREET with your eyes while walking. This way you are forewarned on what could be happening around the direction where you are going. A commotion? A thief running towards you (you could be grabbed as a hostage). A shootout between the police and criminals. While inside the car, keep your doors and windows locked (obvious ba?)
If a beggar comes along, knocked twice on your window…they will go away. Someone said it is a sign for syndicates operating this begging racket that you are not “katalo.” (Their people know this). When parked, do not keep your valuables, laptops, cameras, bags, inside the car. Transfer them to the trunk. If a criminal stops in front of your car in an attempt to stop you, SAGASAAN MO!
November 21, 2013 @ 8:54 PM
Thanks for sharing. Your friend sure is careless though.
November 23, 2013 @ 12:44 AM
It was a careless move, yes. I don’t usually give alms. Just that one time that I had an extra granola bar. I learned a lot and I definitely think that it was meant to happen. Because if it didn’t happen, you wouldn’t be reading this post. At least now, more people are aware of this.
November 21, 2013 @ 8:57 PM
ano ginagawa ng mga BINAY
November 21, 2013 @ 8:59 PM
dumbass fool. there are just too many warnings and advisories being given by the government that strictly says “DO NOT GIVE MONEY OR FOOD TO BEGGARS” as the more the public tolerates them, the more these beggars wont stop. and as you can see, it is now being exploited by criminal syndicates as a new avenue for robbing people.
November 21, 2013 @ 9:01 PM
Don’t open the cars window too wide.
November 21, 2013 @ 9:18 PM
I’d grab my gun instead of my phone. Then shoot him in the shoulders. Serves him right!
November 21, 2013 @ 9:35 PM
“assistance through the proper agencies such as the DSWD instead.” then forces you to put names of politicians. -.-
November 21, 2013 @ 9:58 PM
Bawal ang magpalimos at MAGBIGAY ng limos sa Anti-Mendicancy Law: http://www.lawphil.net/statutes/presdecs/pd1978/pd_1563_1978.html
November 21, 2013 @ 10:12 PM
ay! bakit kasi binuksan ang window?! grabe nman ang BOBO naman! grabe!! kasalanan nya yan!!! hahahaha gago kasi! yabang bukas muna window bago kuha coins! yan karma!
November 21, 2013 @ 10:22 PM
watch your words tester1234, nobody wants to be a victim. just pray hard this time na hinde mangyari sayo ang nangyari sa kanya. kung wala kang sasakyan, eh sa public transport. karma strikes so fast like a lightning nowadays. beware.
November 22, 2013 @ 12:01 AM
Be careful with your words. A lapse in judgement doesn’t make one “bobo”. He may have made a mistake but shouldn’t be demeaned for it.
November 23, 2013 @ 12:50 AM
Yes, I know that it was a stupid mistake to open the window first before getting what I want to give. As I’ve said to some other commenters, the only one who was outside my car was the little kid (that’s what I thought). I wasn’t exposed to these kinds of incidents, and I don’t usually give alms, so I guess it was bound to happen. Learned a lot though. I hope that people pick up something from my story, too.
November 21, 2013 @ 10:20 PM
Better not to give. Its the season of giving but think first of your safety. Take note that you can no longer give if you are no longer safe. Another thing, if its a kid that simply knocks and ask for alms, I am not going to give anything, why, because that will make them to have the mindset of always asking alms. You’re paying your taxes, have the government agency apply its function, like for example, DSWD. Report it to them the kid and its location.
November 21, 2013 @ 10:34 PM
it’s normal if we’re talking about “Kalayaan”. that place always have those kids running around knocking on cars specially the BGC exit part.
November 21, 2013 @ 10:55 PM
It’s a scary thing to happen. I just hoped the thief passed in front of the car so your friend could pin him with the bumper next time and break his patella and smash his body till it’s unrecognizable. Or maybe your friend get a .45 handgun and load a hollow point ammo and unload all slugs till the thief’s brain is vaporized. It could be mean, but they have to know they can have a decent job and earn money.
November 21, 2013 @ 11:02 PM
Why would he open the window first before he turns to look for something to give? You’re friend became the perfect victim.
November 21, 2013 @ 11:03 PM
Your*
November 21, 2013 @ 11:07 PM
uhh, why did he open his window before looking for something to give to a beggar?
November 21, 2013 @ 11:45 PM
Same scenario with wheninmanila author I think.. Keep safe!
November 22, 2013 @ 12:21 AM
Hi share ko lang…. Beware of the kids along EDSA North Avenue….. Maraming rugby boys and girls dun, plus usually, medyo masikip din ang traffic dun, especially by night time…. They may have the same tactics too…. Be safe everyone!
November 22, 2013 @ 3:41 AM
And I thought my country was a haven for criminals during the Yultide Season!
November 22, 2013 @ 5:00 AM
November 23, 2013 @ 12:54 AM
It was a mistake to open the window halfway. That’s true. But I learned from this, so people who may have read this and shared this will also be informed. Hence, more people will be safe and cautious. That must have been the reason why I did that stupid mistake since I don’t usually give alms.
November 22, 2013 @ 5:32 AM
something like those happened to me in 2001, the only difference was that there was no child, they were both adults and they look my bag and smashed the side mirror of my car and nobody helped me as well
November 22, 2013 @ 2:57 PM
Good thing you lived to talk about it. Be safe. Merry Christmas. :)
November 22, 2013 @ 7:02 AM
November 22, 2013 @ 7:37 AM
remind your friend that giving alms in the street is illegal so nobody should do it! PD no 1563 is the reference for those who want to know
November 22, 2013 @ 2:56 PM
Noted. :)
November 22, 2013 @ 7:38 AM
Where are the Police? actually beside them….Funny that MMDA people apprehend jaywalkers but the kids playing ont he streets and those selling food are not considered jaywalkers. Why kaya?
November 22, 2013 @ 2:55 PM
The same way traffic enforcers don’t apprehend jeepneys that load and unload anywhere they want. Disappointing right?
November 22, 2013 @ 7:39 AM
more disasters please as if asking.
November 22, 2013 @ 8:33 AM
Presence of mind… If only he closes the window I’m sure that the crook will then let go of the knife if his arm stuck and in pain. Just my 2 cents :) But still prevention is still better. We must avoid beggars for we don’t know if they really needing it for themselves or they needing it because somebody else are asking them to do so for their own benefit. Sad but true :(
November 22, 2013 @ 2:55 PM
Yes. He could’ve just kept it closed. But some people still have faith that people mean well… the problem is, they end up getting hurt in the process.
November 23, 2013 @ 1:00 AM
Chuckie’s right. I’m not really exposed to those kinds of incidents. I don’t usually give alms. I’d have to admit, I’m may be the person people call “sheltered”. Besides, I can’t think of doing something else to get out of that situation. I was scared that the robber might hurt me so I complied to his demand right away. After all, I learned a lot from the incident and people were informed about this, that’s the best way I can put it.
November 22, 2013 @ 8:52 AM
The picture above is not Kalayaan ave. but its Dela Rosa St. cor Perea St. In Makati. just sharing… :)
November 22, 2013 @ 2:53 PM
No one said the photo was shot along Kalayaan. It’s just an image of “traffic”. No need to be too critical.
November 22, 2013 @ 9:07 AM
peke yan tang inang to makagawa ng istoryahe parang nasa show time lang traffic nga tutukan ka ng kutsilyo tarantado ka makatawag ka lang ng atensyon iho de futa
November 22, 2013 @ 9:21 AM
There is a law against giving alms: Presidential Decree No. 1563. Section 5 states “Any person who abets mendicancy by giving alms directly to mendicants, exploited
infants and minors on public roads, sidewalks, parks and bridges shall be
punished by a fine nor exceeding P20.00.”
November 22, 2013 @ 9:39 AM
Another deterrent is the power window itself. The motor can apply sufficient pressure to disable a limb.Close the window, honk the horn or start moving the vehicle. That would surely make them think twice.
November 22, 2013 @ 2:51 PM
That’s true. Hopefully next time he does that.
November 22, 2013 @ 9:46 AM
lol, if were your friend, i would reach for the automatic window control then grab that man’s hand and break it
November 22, 2013 @ 2:51 PM
Medyo bata pa eh. Baka naunahan ng takot. I don’t blame him, though.
November 22, 2013 @ 9:56 AM
You’re not suppose to give alms to street children because it is illegal.
– You don’t know how they will spend the money.
– You are encouraging their parents to exploit them
– You are encouraging them to stay and beg in the middle of the road where it is NOT safe.
– If you want to help, do it the proper way. partially sponsor their education or donate to orphanages
– don’t give just to make yourself feel good for a moment, think of the consequences of your action.
PRESIDENTIAL DECREE No. 1563, any person who abets
mendicancy by giving alms directly to mendicants, exploited infants and
minors on public roads, sidewalks, parks and bridges shall be punishable
by law.

ARE YOU AWARE THAT GIVING ALMS TO STREET CHILDREN IS BREAKING THE LAW?
an anti-mendicancy law (PD 1563) has been passed in the philippines prohibiting the giving of alms to beggars in the streets. they say that the best way to help the underprivileged is to teach them how to help themselves, not give them money which they may later use to buy rugby (that way, you have actually and legally played the role of “accomplice to crime”).
found that on this website (http://www.mylot.com/post/1911767/are-you-aware-that-giving-alms-to-street-children-is-breaking-the)
and the full coverage of the law is here (http://www.chanrobles.com/presidentialdecrees/presidentialdecreeno1563.html#.Uo7AIcSl4YB)
I’m not a lawyer sooo I’m not exactly sure if that law is fully implemented these days. Now, I also don’t want to sound like a heartless arse so I’ll just say my opinion this way: If I give them money, where will they use it? Rugby? and almost all the time these kids are usually exploited by some human trafficking syndicate or worse their own parents which is a bad (AND ILLEGAL) thing. ALSO, (from the blog posted above) “giving charity, they say, should be done responsibly, not simply as a way of relieving guilt or misinformed pity. they say giving alms to street children helps promote and condone child abuse and encourages wayward parents to tell their children to “go beg.” in terms of religion, the church does not approve of blind charity as well. saint vincent de paul said, “indiscriminate giving is a sin.”
so, why risk your own safety for something like that? For me I don’t want to end up like that poor guy. There are other ways of giving charity and it is NOT by endorsing beggars on the street.
November 22, 2013 @ 11:33 AM
i have in my door pocket an IV syringe (the thickest & longest I got from Mercury) which i will thrust in the arm of anyone who will do this to me. It used to be a cutter but i thought of the blood that will drip & stain my car. Will I have the courage ? I did it before in a movie house. Prayer will protect you. And please… always think of your safety. Just a very tiny opening to slip the coin or the bill. Be safe, everyone.
November 22, 2013 @ 11:40 AM
Dadami ang mga kriminal dahil sa poverty, drug, economic, etc. problems. The local government should protect its citizens from these criminals, while the national government should do something about these problems which are impossible to happen!
November 22, 2013 @ 11:48 AM
Never give alms to anyone on the streets.
November 22, 2013 @ 12:00 PM
Oh no, that’s exactly what I do! I always have a bag of treats in my car, preferring to give away food than money. Thanks for the warning!
November 22, 2013 @ 2:46 PM
Cheers! Be safe.
November 22, 2013 @ 12:04 PM
“Modus Operandi”, more popularly known as “M.O.” is Latin approximately translated as “method of operation”. It is a neutral term that does not necessarily denote criminal activity.
This sort of “operation” would just be called a “scam” elsewhere, why call it “modus operandi”? Even detectives reserve the colloquial term “m.o.” to investigations for the action behind felony criminal acts and above.
November 22, 2013 @ 2:45 PM
I know it’s latin. And I damn well know what it means. Spare me the lecture, please. Read the title. It says “Modus Operandi by criminals”. It is exactly what it means. A new “mode of operation” done by criminals. Yes, even detectives use the term. Nowhere in this post nor on its title does it insinuate that the term “modus operandi” is only meant for criminals. *facepalm!*
November 22, 2013 @ 4:35 PM
You’d have a point except for the fact that some radio DJs were talking about the same context about other ***petty*** crimes last night. As a Balikbayan who never heard the term applied exclusively and contextually to crimes in my youth, this leads me to believe that the term has taken on new meaning in my decades long absence.
I missed exactly what sort of crime they were talking about when I tuned in, maybe your post exactly, but one of the guys chose to speak about the old “Zesto Gang” as an “***old*** Modus Operandi”, in contrast to the “***new*** Modus Operandi” reportedly afoot.
Why couldn’t you just say “Motorists Beware – New Criminal Scam Going On!” anyway? Ang aarte talaga mga mag-pakulo ng mga salita. Or let me guess, “pakulo” is likewise a “dated” term for euphemistically referring to a “fad” now?
November 22, 2013 @ 12:23 PM
All this..because of poverty that can’t be eradicated. hopeless i must say…
November 22, 2013 @ 12:48 PM
Well this is sad. but can I just say that.. I think your friend should have get a money/coins before opening his car window. Just saying. But I feel really bad and I hope this is a lesson to everyone :)
November 22, 2013 @ 2:36 PM
I agree. He shouldn’t have opened it before getting something to give… or better yet, not open it at all. But we all make mistakes. Some worse than others.
November 22, 2013 @ 1:11 PM
why would you open your window then turn your back against it? very intelligent move. hahaha
November 22, 2013 @ 2:35 PM
Actually, I was thinking the same thing. But I figured it was just a momentary lapse.
November 22, 2013 @ 1:23 PM
Is this really true? seems illogical to me..i have never seen or known anyone who would open their windows first before reaching their money. i dont think people are ignorant these days as hold-up/snatchers/thief are rampant with those street children.
November 22, 2013 @ 2:49 PM
Yes, it’s true. It happened to my friend. But I also agree that it was wrong to open the window before getting something to give. It was, in my opinion, a momentary lapse. But some people still would like to believe that not everyone has dark motives behind everything.
November 22, 2013 @ 1:27 PM
DSWD again?…think a sevenfold
November 22, 2013 @ 1:42 PM
I’d rather have a knife on my neck and risk my life than donate to DSDW… That’s just being fucked as hard, only TWICE.
November 22, 2013 @ 2:34 PM
LOL! That made me laugh. Cheers! :)
November 22, 2013 @ 1:50 PM
Plain stupidity.
November 22, 2013 @ 2:33 PM
A lapse of judgement doesn’t make you stupid. I hope no one calls your actions stupid when you commit something similar.
November 22, 2013 @ 2:15 PM
I am just wondering why you opened your window before searching what you would like to give to the kid? But thanks for the sharing.my experience, I already have a coin to give everytime I encountered this one but then I only open the window a little with enough space for a coin to passed through.
November 22, 2013 @ 2:51 PM
The moral of the story is that we should never give anything to beggars or children asking for alms, as they are sometimes being used for heinous crimes….good thing that its just a cp that was gotten from him and not his life….as we can replace material things but not our precious life…take care…
November 22, 2013 @ 2:58 PM
True. Be safe.
November 22, 2013 @ 3:51 PM
Its against the law to give alms…
November 22, 2013 @ 3:56 PM
Don’t ever give alms to beggars. You are just giving them the impression that begging is just fine…. Also, majority, if not all, of beggars (including children) are modus operandi or are supervised by syndicates using them to have easy money. Instead of money, give them food. Hindi lahat ng mukhang nakaka-awa ay talagang nakaka-awa. At hindi porket may barya tayo or sobra ay dapat na natin ibigay sa kalsada. Give them to the proper agencies.
November 22, 2013 @ 8:31 PM
Instead of giving money on the streets and risking life and property, better course your donations through your trusted charities. You also discourage this dangerous and unhealthy practice of begging on highways.
November 22, 2013 @ 8:46 PM
This is Brgy Secretary Tony Villafuerte of Pinagkaisahan in Makati which has jurisdiction of the junction of kalayaan-32nd street (foto shown here).. can the victim tell us which particular part of kalayaan was the incident? Was it reported to a police/brgy ofc? We might be able to help if it happened in brgy pinagkaisahan as we have cctvs in kalayaan cor harvard and kalayaan cor 32nd. Note: the side of 32nd where the street kid-beggars are is not in our AOR though and is too far from our cctvs
November 23, 2013 @ 12:23 AM
Before the U-Turn section, C5 Kalayaan, NB.
November 23, 2013 @ 8:03 AM
Its at the other end of kalayaan. My barangay is between edsa and BGC.
Also beware of highschool or grade school-aged kids walking in groups of 5 to 7 along C5 and edsa if traffic is at stsndstill.
They will simultaneously open all 4 doors. IF NOT LOCKED, THEY WILL RUN AWAY WITH ALL THINGS THEY CAN GRAB
November 22, 2013 @ 10:17 PM
I think the victim was at fault too. Sorry to say this but who is in their conscious mind open their windows first before giving something to the beggar? If that person really wanted to give something that person should’ve got something to give before opening the window. Open the window just enough for you to give, not too open.
November 22, 2013 @ 11:46 PM
Theres something wrong with the victim … “He opens his window halfway and turns to his bag placed on the passenger seat, looking for something to give to the child.” Normaly what we do is we get our coins first before rollingbdown the window… frim there you can see right away whos in front of you or besides your car.
Just saying… -Joms
November 23, 2013 @ 12:25 AM
Thanks. Learned a lot by now. :) Chuckie’s right. It was a momentary lapse.
November 23, 2013 @ 12:19 AM
never give alms to this mobile beggars. in the first place that is not the way to help them. specially kids on the streets. not only that we are not helping them in this way but it exposes us (and also them) to such dangers. the very tactics they use “paawa” effect is very deceptive. sadyang nakakawa nga at ako man ay naawa rin, (that’s precisely the ploy) but again giving them alms will not solve or even provide them the better condition we want for them assuming they are really true to their condition. if no one is responding to such flea then hopefully there would be no one to use it whether as a “legitimate” begging only or as a modus.
November 23, 2013 @ 5:22 AM
Three days ago, I witnessed modus
operandi of these criminals to use their dirty work by asking alms
“limos” in a terminal along Edsa (Paramount – Front of SM
North-Edsa). There’s a pack of street teenager that are waiting to be
their victim. As we stepped down from a bus ride and aiming to cross
to go to a foot bridge, about 2-3 street children are asking alms,
the 1st kid went to the lady which is in front of me. The
usual, the lady ignored him but he’s still following her at her back
which in turn he’s already in front of me while there’s a teenager
beside me asking alms too. Then for about 2-3 seconds he was ignored
by a lady, I heard the kid asking alms beside me was whispering to
kid front of me saying “you’re too slow..” (ang tagal mo…).
Then suddenly, the kid which was ignored by a lady attacked her
earrings, it took him 2-3 seconds to get it by force. Since the boy
was just in front of me, I had a thinking to kick the boy but I
remember there was also a kid beside me watching my move and the pack
of them was behind me. In the end, the snatcher disappear in an
instant while the lady touching her ears checking if blood comes out.
Regarding the victim of this thread, I
had also experienced my phone was taken by force in Guadalupe area.
The snatcher disappear very quick. The following day as I walked
along Edsa Cubao, there are a lot of selling snatched iPhones (black
and white). Just making myself to realize, which them is my phone =(
November 23, 2013 @ 7:50 AM
i’m sure magka connive un bata and un lalaki!
November 23, 2013 @ 8:58 AM
My 5 centavos piece,
Criminals are only waiting for an opportuniy and a victim. Don’t give him one
November 23, 2013 @ 9:41 AM
Should’ve opened the window just an inch or two if handing only money. Lesson learned.
November 23, 2013 @ 4:14 PM
Sad!
Kakatakot na tuloy umuwi ng pilipinas
November 23, 2013 @ 11:06 PM
thanks for sharing the story.
November 24, 2013 @ 11:23 AM
Word of advice: do NOT roll down your window halfway, just give enough room to pass what u need to give. Be safe
November 24, 2013 @ 12:29 PM
The worst part is, even if there were any policemen around, they wouldn’t have done anything. One time I was stuck in traffic and some people decided to jump on the Pepsi van in front of me and they took crates of soda and ran away laughing, proud of how they got away with it. I called out to a police officer nearby and told him to get to those thieves and all he shouted back was “nakatakas na mam eh!”
Disguting.
November 24, 2013 @ 8:34 PM
Wag maawa sa mga bata na nanlilimos. Un lang. Yaan nyo sila mamatay
November 28, 2013 @ 4:53 AM
dswd is also no good
December 5, 2013 @ 12:48 AM
Your friend is a dumbass. Forgetting a basic action inside a vehicle on PH roads. NEVER OPEN YOUR WINDOW above 1/8 of yourself. Yeah its the season for giving alright, whole-heartedly gave the iPhone away.
December 6, 2013 @ 11:27 AM
Thanks chuckie it helps to be SAFE…god bless to all !
December 6, 2013 @ 12:35 PM
He should’ve had the money in his hand before he even opened his window. And he should’ve opened it only a tiny bit, enough for a P10 coin or a P20 bill to pass through..
December 6, 2013 @ 12:41 PM
dswd tlga?
December 6, 2013 @ 1:10 PM
Your friend is just plain stupid…
1. Why open your window half way then turn around to get something? That’s just plain ignorant… He could’ve just grabbed what he planned on giving BEFORE OPENING THE WINDOW HALF WAY. Also, he could have just cracked open the window giving just enough space to drop some money or food
2. Cases like that, use your head and not your gut.. Someone that looks to be in a hurry trying to rob you, what do you? STALL SHIT AS FUCKING GOOD AS YOU CAN. I figure he had his door locked? If your friend had done some action, played the “hero” card right, your friend would still have his phone right now.
It’s both sad and stupid that these kinds of operations actually happen. Granted some really put you in bad positions where you can’t do anything (especially if you’re not a fighter). Just my two cents. All the best to your friend
December 6, 2013 @ 2:03 PM
This is the price we pay when we asked for Freedom. No more Capital Punishment.
December 6, 2013 @ 2:14 PM
Mendicancy in whatever form or amount should simply not be tolerated. Each and every one of us has a choice(s) to make our lives better. Begging is not one of them.
December 6, 2013 @ 4:05 PM
well, even if they’re real beggars, it’s not a good idea to give alms on the highway due to road hazard.
December 7, 2013 @ 12:55 PM
hahahahahah!!!!!! good story though it gives a lesson that a lapse in proper judgement makes some one victim like this. But, the victim himself made a senseless coward, he should have at least blown a quick and accidental brief horn immediately and simultaneously with the glass pulling up after the dacoit had pulled his weapon out of the window so as to attract attention of police or others. I suggest everybody on such situation (fighting with knife holder) to make surprise attack by slamming the robber’s body with the car-door’s quick and partial opening into him to so that the robber could be hit and hurt to cause his off-balance. Such off-balance and hitting the ground could easily attract the attention of passer-byes and police also.
December 11, 2013 @ 12:00 PM
Never help begars! You must be stupid to help them! That’s a nono for motorists!
December 28, 2013 @ 4:57 PM
Question is why open the window when he had nothing to give to the kid yet?
November 15, 2015 @ 10:14 AM
