Who would’ve known that ube could be used in so many dishes and in so many unusual ways? Some of you probably know this and aren’t surprised, but I sure as hell didn’t.
I love ube! A lot! But I’ve only learned to enjoy it in the most common and typical of ways. You can pretty much imagine my pleasant surprise when I discovered the various ways that ube can be prepared and enjoyed when I recently flew to Bohol to attend their Ubi Festival 2016.
Bohol is probably the province I frequented the most last year, totalling to about 5 trips. And during all those visits, never was I told that Ubi (this is how Boholanos say “ube”) was such an important crop in this place. So much so that Bohol celebrates the Ubi Festival annually.
The Ubi Festival is held every year to give importance to the crop that feeds Bohol and other parts of the Philippines. Giving it the value and recognition it deserves is a testament to the tremendous love Boholanos have for ubi.

Responsible and ethical journalism. This is something that is often talked about within the industries of social and traditional media. It simply means that as a journalist – whether online, on air, or on print – there is always a responsibility and a duty to make sure that whatever information is being let out in public is factual and true. This holds true regardless if you are writing about current events or simply stating a personal opinion.
In an ideal world, bloggers would strictly abide by this important tenet – not only because one cares for his/her integrity but also because it is the right thing to do. Readers deserve accurate reporting.
Unfortunately, we don’t live in an ideal world. Far from it, sad to say. And as much as most of us who own and maintain blogs strive hard to uplift the image and integrity of the blogging community, there remains a significant number of irresponsible jerks who write with reckless abandon and with no sense of responsibility – all for the sake of being controversial and coming out with the juiciest news first.
Sleeplessness or lack of sleep. Whichever of these two keeps you company at night, the negative effects to one’s body are the same such as advanced ageing and a weak immune system.
In my line of work, whether blogging until the wee hours of the morning, staying up from morning till next morning for a taping of a TV series episode, or traveling locally or out of the country with a tight itinerary, lack of sleep is a common (and very frequent) thing.
And as much as regular exercise and having an active lifestyle is important, it is critical to have enough sleep as well.
As much as I’d like to get ample rest in order to recover from a stressful and hectic day, sometimes that just isn’t possible. I’m sure a lot of you can relate – especially those who work late nights employed at call centers or BPOs. Some of you have probably even resorted to snacking on junk food and coffee, or worse, smoking, during the very late hours just to stay awake and alert.
Here’s the thing… I found out that the body’s immune system undergoes a natural cycle of rest and repair from 10pm-3am. This corresponds to the natural sleeping hours of the day. However, the nature of my work and probably yours, too, does not allow for much rest during these hours.
It doesn’t take a genius to know that a weak immune system easily leads to sickness.

Hotdog stands are a dime a dozen in and around the metro. From typical hotdog stands along the streets or beside school entrances to one-stop hotdog establishments inside malls and shopping complexes. I absolutely love hotdogs… whether they are on buns or enjoyed with rice, I can eat them throughout the day. But with all these […]

It goes without saying that whenever there’s an opportunity for me to watch amazing firework displays like the “5th Philippine International Pyromusical Competition 2014“, I always grab the chance. Earlier, my wife and I went over the topic of how my mother’s passing on exactly the eve of my birthday could’ve actually been more deliberate on her part rather than coincidental. You see, my mom and I never really saw eye to eye on a lot of things. We’d disagree a lot of times. […]
I recently got wind through good friend, Ronnie Henares, about an awesome goodwill and charity event happening tomorrow to help our fellow kababayans who were severely affected by the recent flooding. Bottega Studio by L.A. based photographer and stylist (husband and wife tandem), Mau and Au Mauricio, together with a group of photographers, makeup artists […]
St. Augustine once said, “the world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page”. As a person who has gone to quite a number of places around and beyond our country, this particular saying breathes deeper meaning to me all the more. Truly, one must not be easily satisfied with merely […]
